چکیده

In this paper we consider Markov processes in which the state at time t is & : Zd + (0, 1,2}. We think of 0 = grass, 1 = bushes, and 2 = trees, and formulate the evolution as follows: (i) l’s and 2’s each die (i.e. become 0) at rate 1. (ii) l’s (resp. 2’s) give birth at rate A, (resp. A,). (iii) If the birth occurs at x the offspring is sent to a site chosen at random from {y: y -x E X}, K = the set of neighbors of 0. (iv) If l,(y) 2 t,(x) then the birth is suppressed. The last rule reflects the fact that grass, bushes, trees is a successional sequence, i.e. each plant can displace its predecessor. Since 2’s can replace l’s or O’s, it should be clear that 5, = {y: t,(y) = 2) is a Markov process. In the terminology of Liggett (1985) or Durrett (1988), it is the contact process with neighborhood set N. Let A,=inf{A,: P(l:#@ for all r~0)>0}, where ly={y:[:“(y)=2} when &o(O) = 2 and [y(x) = 0 for x f 0. Here the superscript 20 on 5 suggests a 2 in a sea of O’s, and the superscript 0 on t indicates that this set valued process has Si = (0). If A, < A, then the 2’s die out and the process reduces to a one type contact process, so we will only be interested in what happens when A2 > A,. Our first result shows that the one dimensional nearest neighbor case is not interesting.

Hawthorn (crataegus Monogyna) Populations in Mid-canterbury

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is a naturalised tree that is classified as a noxious plant in several counties in the eastern South Island. It is locally abundant in lowland forest remnants, and with the indigenous spiny shrub matagouri (Discaria toumatou), on grazing land in Canterbury. Two scrub sites near Porters Pass, where the original hawthorn trees still existed, and a forest site near Ko...

Tempo-Spatial Dynamics of Adult Plum Curculio (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Based on Semiochemical-Baited Trap Captures in Blueberries.

Plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst), has become an important pest of highbush blueberries in the northeastern United States. Here, we conducted experiments in 2010-2013 to compare the efficacy of semiochemical-baited traps for C. nenuphar versus conventional (beating cloth) sampling methods in blueberries, and to understand the seasonal abundance and distribution of C. nenuphar adult...

Color preference, seasonality, spatial distribution and species composition of thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in northern highbush blueberries

We investigated color preference, seasonal abundance, spatial distribution and species composition of thrips in northern highbush blueberries, Vaccinium corymbosum L., in New Jersey (USA). White sticky traps were more attractive to thrips compared with yellow or blue traps. Thrips captures using white sticky traps showed that their flight activity begins 20e30 d after the onset of flowering, wi...

Limitation of nesting resources for ants in Colombian forests and coffee plantations

1. This study examines limitation of nesting resources for leaf-litter and twig-nesting ants as a mechanism of diversity loss across an intensification gradient of coffee production in Colombia. Twelve farms were selected and classified into four management types: forest, polygeneric shade coffee, monogeneric shade coffee, and sun coffee (unshaded coffee monocultures). 2. At each of the farms, ...

Expanding mountain forest promotes climate warming

Environment[1] Environment[1]Climate Change [2]Forest [3]Mountain [4]Norway [5]Forskning.no [6] Birch forest is currently expanding in mountain regions because of climate warming and reduced grazing pressure. A recent study shows that increased mountain forest promotes climate warming. Tourists and locals have noticed that forests are creeping up hillsides in mountain regions in Norway. Beautif...
